February 2025 · Durban Film Office
Submissions are now open for this year's Blue Economy Short Film Challenge — a flagship initiative of the Durban Film Office calling on South African filmmakers to tell stories that explore Durban's deep relationship with the ocean, its coastal communities, and the growing blue economy sector.
What We're Looking For
We're inviting short films (5–15 minutes) across any genre — documentary, narrative fiction, or experimental — that engage with themes of ocean conservation, maritime industry, coastal culture, marine tourism, or the lived experience of Durban's harbour and beachfront communities.
Prizes & Support
Winners will receive cash prizes, professional mentorship from established South African filmmakers, and production support including access to DFO crew networks and priority location permits. Finalists will also be showcased at a dedicated screening event in partnership with the Durban International Film Festival.
How to Enter
Entries must be submitted with a completed entry form, a one-page treatment, and proof of South African residency or citizenship. The submission window closes 30 June 2025.
Full terms, conditions and submission guidelines are available by contacting our Development team.
